HP intros mini-Q nettop with dual-core Atom CPU

HP recently used an event in Taiwan to unveil its first-ever nettop PC, the mini-Q 2030, that is powered by Intel's 1.6GHz dual-core Atom 330 processor and 2GB of DDR2 RAM. Other hardware includes a 160GB 7,200rpm SATA hard-drive with Windows Vista preloaded and a dual-layer DVD burner. It also has four USB 2.0 ports, two PS/2 ports, an Ethernet port, a VGA jack for connecting to monitors and an audio and microphone jack.

The mini-Q weighs in a maximum of just 4.4lbs and does not include a monitor or any peripherals. Along with the mini-Q 2030, HP also showed the mini-Q 2020 which sports the single-core Atom 230 rated at the same 1.6GHz, half the RAM at 1GB and the older Windows XP OS.

The HP mini-Q 2030 will be available in Taiwan for the equivalent of around $386 while the HP mini-Q 2020, will cost about $296. There is no official information on if or when the nettops will be available in North America. [via Slashgear]

Two new HP devices revealed

HP’s mysterious new smartphone entrants have been revealed, and certainly look stylish enough. Apparently the result of bringing the design in-house the HP Ipaq VoiceMessenger and DataManager feature unique looks.

HP Ipaq DataManager

The DataManager is a Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional device which features a slide-out keyboard, 2.8 inch QVGA screen (really?), WIFI, Bluetooth, Quadband GSM, Tri-band 7.2 Mbps HSDPA (European bands), HSUPA, A-GPS and a 3.1 Megapixel camera with LED flash. It has 128 MB RAM and 256 MB ROM, microSD expansion, with a 1140 mAh battery.

The smartphone is 160g and 5.7 x 1.74 x 11.4 cm, and has a 2.5mm headphone jack. Opera Mobile is bundled, as is Google maps mobile and 30 Day Trial of Webraska Turn-by-Turn Navigation.

HP Ipaq VoiceMessenger

The HP Ipaq Voice Messenger has similar specs to the DataManager, but instead of the slide-out keyboard features a 20 key suretype-style keyboard. The non-touchscreen Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard device has a 2.4 inch screen is which is regrettably also QVGA. The connectivity and GPS receiver is the same, but the device is much lighter at 107 g and measures 5.0 x 1.36 x 11.4 cm. Despite this it features a larger 1260 mAh Lithium-Polymer battery.

Both devices feature micro-USB ports for synchronization. Both handsets also feature a new optical sensor that replaces the five-way navigator key common to many phone designs. This makes it easier for users to move through menus with greater speed while minimising the chances of mechanical failure, according to Neil Dagger, HP’s iPaq and wireless business manager. “You just glide your thumb over the disk, and you glide though the menus, tapping it when you want to select something,” he said.

Both models also have a power saving mode that minimises power consumption if the battery charge level starts to get low while the user is out on the road.

The two models will be available either SIM-free through HP resellers, or with a wireless contract through Vodafone Europe-wide..

HP said that the iPaq Voice Messenger is aimed at users that want a phone for voice calls first, but who may also need to receive emails while on the go.

David Wright, vice president and general manager of HP’s personal systems group, said the new smartphones were designed to bridge the gap between work and play, targeting what the company calls “prosumers”, or professional consumers, and small and medium businesses.

The iPaq Voice Messenger costs £333 (SIM-free) and is due to ship in mid-November, while the iPaq Data Messenger costs £399 (SIM-free) and will be available from the end of November.

Vodafone pricing has yet to be disclosed, but the operator is likely to offer the devices free depending on the monthly tariff chosen.

Acer gains on netbooks, HP keeps global PC lead

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Taiwan's Acer Inc surged past global champion Hewlett-Packard Co in European personal computer sales in the third quarter, in the clearest sign of the move toward cheap, small mini-notebook computers, research firm Gartner Inc said on Tuesday.

Worldwide PC shipments rose 15 percent in the quarter, with HP in the lead, followed by Dell Inc.

The July-September period was marked by strong growth in the lower-cost mini-notebook category, which Acer has been focusing on, Gartner analyst Mika Kitagawa said. This helped bolster the overall PC market in he face of slumping consumer spending.

Acer's market share gains in the quarter were driven by surging sales of its mini-notebooks, a segment in which HP and Dell do not have a strong presence, she said.

Mini-notebooks, also known a netbooks, refer to PCs with screen sizes of five to 10 inches. They usually cost less than $500, while standard laptops can cost two to four times as much.

Kitagawa estimated that less than 5 percent of overall PC shipments are mini-notebooks, but she said the market seems to be growing.

Overall, worldwide PC shipments rose 15 percent from last year to 80.6 million units. At the same time, U.S. shipments rose 4.6 percent to 17.4 million units.

HP shipped 14.8 million units in the quarter, for a market share of 18.4 percent, barely changed from a year ago. Dell was in second place with a share of 13.6 percent, down 0.5 percent from last year, while Acer's piece of the market jumped to 12.5 percent from 9.7 percent.

Kitagawa also noted that Acer saw 16 percent U.S. shipment growth from the second quarter, while Dell and HP struggled.

"In general the U.S. market felt the impact of the economic downturn very much, so especially those vendors that are in the professional market, it had much impact," she said.
