Apple Poor at Converting iPhone Queries into iPhone Sales

Nielsen Mobile has estimated that there are 3.6 million mobile subscribers 13+ actively using the Apple iPhone, as of October 2008. While some sources suggest that the iPhone has overtaken Motorola’s RAZR in sales, their analysis of Q3 acquisitions shows a very close race at the top. Among those subscribers who acquired their phone in the past three months, iPhone had a 3% market share in Q3 2008, behind the Motorola RAZR V3 series which still had a 5% share of recently acquired devices.

Looking more broadly at iPhone’s mass appeal, their analysis shows that 11% of those purchasing a new mobile phone between January and September of this year considered purchasing an iPhone. Did they go for it? 21% of those who considered purchasing the iPhone during that period converted to acquisition.

Comparing Apple to other leading brands, 21% is a relatively low conversion rate (those with HTC in their consideration set converted at 69% and those with Motorola converted at 49%, for example). ­As of Q3 2008, Apple was the 7th most cited brand considered, but 12th in terms of conversion. Nelson analysts believe this reflects the high degree of awareness and buzz around the iPhone, but AT&T’s exclusive carriage of the device.

Among owners, Apple can today boast the highest overall satisfaction rate of any handset manufacturer. In Q3 2008, 89% of recent iPhone acquirers (past 6 months) were highly satisfied with their device – compared to an industry average of 71%. While brand affinity and style play a part here, data further below will demonstrate the high degree to which iPhone users are making the most out of their device.

The expansion of the iPhone universe will continue. As of Q3 2008, one in five subscribers (21%) who intend to upgrade their device in the next 12 months say they’ll consider purchasing an iPhone next – up from just 15% a year prior. That’s in part due to a heavy ongoing advertising spend from both Apple and AT&T to promote their wunderkind: Nielsen estimates that AT&T spent $21M across TV, Print, Radio and Internet to promote devices in September. For their part, Apple spent $15M themselves to promote the iPhone.

While the arrival of the iPhone has generated a universally positive response from mobile games publishers and developers, the volume of paid-for mobile game downloads has nonetheless flatlined across North America and Western Europe, according to Juniper Research.

The report found that although the retail value of the global mobile games market is expected to rise from $5.4bn in 2008 to more than $10bn in 2013, the potential for growth in many key markets is being dampened by a combination of limited on-portal revenue share for publishers -- meaning that some are exiting the mobile games industry -- and poor games marketing.

According to report author Dr Windsor Holden, "The revenue share offered by Apple to games publishers is incredibly attractive. The danger is that if operators do not respond with a similar business model, publishers faced with low margins may simply exit Java completely, thereby reducing consumer choice in the longer term."

The report also found that while ad-funded downloads have increased markedly in popularity, the revenues accrued from advertising are unlikely to be sufficient to provide developers or operators with a primary revenue stream. It argued that, with cost per mille (CPM) rates likely to fall in the face of pressures on advertising budgets, advertising would be largely employed by most publishers as a means of monetising older content.

However, the Juniper study remained optimistic about prospects for growth in regions such as the Indian Sub Continent, Africa/Middle East and South America, where the combination of increased mobile adoption and low levels of penetration of both games consoles and fixed Internet means that the mobile handset has already become the de facto gaming device.

Other findings from the Juniper report include:

  • China and the Far East will remain the largest regional market for mobile games throughout the period covered by the report.
  • Global revenues from in-game advertising will rise significantly from 2008 to 2013.
  • Operators need to reduce data charges further for out of bundle customers to encourage casual mobile Internet usage and thereby stimulate the mobile entertainment market

Judge Dismisses Psystar's Anti-Trust Counterclaim Against Apple

A California judge has dismissed a counterclaim from Psystar which asserted that Apple was violating federal and state anti-trust laws in limiting the sale and use of Mac OS X on Apple branded computers..

But in a 19-page order passed down on Tuesday, Judge William Alsup largely reject Psystar's claims and granted Apple's motion to have the countersuit thrown out of court should the clone maker not better its argument through an amended complaint that can be filed no later than Monday December 8th.

AppleInsider notes that Psystar attempted to define a "Mac OS market" in which Apple held a monopoly. Apple, of course, successfully disputed this definition of a "market" with which the judge agreed.

"Apple asks its customers to purchase Mac OS knowing that it is to be used only with Apple computers," he wrote. "It is certainly entitled to do so."

Psystar is a small company which sells a Mac clone using off-the-shelf PC parts and a modified version of Mac OS X Leopard. Apple sued Psystar over these products and that case is still pending.

Judge Orders Apple's New Hire to Stop Work

The drama continues for Apple's new employee Mark Papermaster who recently took a job at Apple to replace Tony Fadell. The transition has received more attention than usual due to a lawsuit filed by IBM.

Papermaster was said to have a non-compete agreement in place in which he agreed not to work at a competitor for a period of one year following his employment at IBM.

A new report reveals that a District Court judge has now ordered Papermaster to immediately stop work due to the possible violation of the agreement. Papermaster has argued that IBM and Apple are not competitors. Apple has said they will comply with the court's order but "are confident that Mark Papermaster will be able to ultimately join Apple when the dust settles".

Papermaster was hired at Apple to replace Fadell as senior vice president of Devices Hardware Engineering. Fortune provides a detailed timeline of the events of Papermaster's recruitment. Steve Jobs is said to have offered Papermaster an offer he couldn't refuse, a "once in a liftetime opportunity". Papermaster accepted the job offer despite a significant counteroffer from IBM.

Software Fix for MacBook Pro Trackpad Issue "Coming Soon"

Earlier this week, a number of complaints emerged about a trackpad issue found on the new MacBook Pros.PCPro.co.uk relays one customer's experience:

"Every 50 clicks, my trackpad will stop responding for five to clicks," reports one poster. "Generally this will resolve itself given a few seconds, and is not directly dependent on number of times the trackpad is clicked while unresponsive."

The problem even drew the attention of Apple according to one blogger who received a phone call from the company specifically about the issue:

He told me that Apple is researching the clicking issue. They have no resolution of it and, of course, there's not really an official acknowledgment of it, but they are checking into it because they've heard the complaint frequently.

Just yesterday, a MacRumors reader emailed a similar complaint to Steve Jobs who responded with a short but revealing email that simply stated "Software fix coming soon."

Steve Jobs has been known to reply to emails in the past and a review of the email headers found them to be consistent with Jobs' previous emails. No exact timeframe on the fix was given, but this information should provide some reassurance to those affected that it seems to be correctable with a simple software update. 

Tony Fadell ("Father of iPod") Leaves Apple

The Wall Street Journal reports that Tony Fadell, the senior vice president of the iPod Division at Apple, is leaving the company for personal reasons.

Fadell has been credited as the "father" of the iPod and also was part of the team involved in the development of the iPhone. According to a 2004 Wired profile, Fadell was an independent contractor and hardware expert who came up with the idea for the iPod and eventually approached Apple:

"Tony's idea was to take an MP3 player, build a Napster music sale service to complement it, and build a company around it," Knauss said. "Tony had the business idea."

Knauss said Fadell left Philips and set himself up as an independent contractor to shop the idea around. Knauss said Fadell approached several companies and was turned away by all of them, except for Apple.

As an interesting historical footnote, Fadell approached and briefly worked at RealNetworks before he joined Apple, suggesting that the iPod's history might have been dramatically different. Apple released the iPod on October 23rd, 2001. The iPod is credited for much of Apple's financial success over the following years.

Update: Apple issued a press release confirming the departure:

Apple also announced that Tony Fadell, Apple’s senior vice president of the iPod Division, and his wife Danielle Lambert, vice president of Human Resources, are reducing their roles within the company as they devote more time to their young family. Fadell will remain at Apple as an advisor to the CEO. Lambert will depart the company at the end of this year after a successor is in place.

Mark Papermaster will be joining Apple as senior vice president of Devices Hardware Engineering to replace Fadell. Papermaster is the former IBM executive that Apple recruited which triggered a lawsuit from IBM.

Opera Mini Not Rejected? [Updated]

In a profile this past week of Opera Software, the New York Times had indicated that Opera's Mini Browser had been rejected from the App Store based on anti-competitive grounds. Apple has rejected other applications claiming the submitted application's feature set mirrors one of Apple's too closely; a practice which has drawn heavy criticism.

This particular case, however, may not be entirely accurate according to further research by John Gruber.

My understanding, based on information from informed sources who do not wish to be identified because they were not authorized by their employers, is that Opera has developed an iPhone version of Opera Mini - but they haven't even submitted it to Apple, let alone had it be rejected.


Gruber had previously believed that the browser had been rejected due to a built-in JavaScript interpreter, however he clarifies that this was incorrect. In fact, Opera Mini does not contain such interpretive code. As explained by Gruber:

In a nut, it works like this: You request a URL in Opera Mini. Opera Mini makes the request to a proxy server run by Opera. Opera's proxy server connects to the web server hosting the requested URL, and renders the page into an image. This image is then transmitted (in a proprietary format called OBML - Opera Binary Markup Language) to the Opera Mini client. Opera Mini displays the rendered image on screen. This may sound convoluted, but apparently the result is very effective - it’s faster to transmit, because only OBML (a compressed binary format) is transmitted to the mobile device over the phone network, and far faster to render on slow mobile processors.


However the current version of Opera's Mini browser for other platforms is coded using Java (and BREW) which is not supported on the iPhone and is against the terms of the SDK. In order for Opera Mini to be made officially available, the program would have to be ported to C/Objective-C.

Update: Upon further investigation, the differences between the New York Times and John Gruber's accountings may be based in semantics rather than substance.

An Opera employee blog seems to indicate that Apple is indeed using anti-competitive reasoning for keeping the Opera Mini browser off the iPhone. However, neither the employee's blog entry nor the New York Times article indicate that the browser was officially submitted to the App Store and rejected, the point to which Gruber took issue. It remains possible that Apple and Opera have been communicating via channels outside of the App Store submission process.

Apple says "no" to iPhone Opera Browser

Although in numbers it lags behind Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari, the Opera web browser is known for having a devoted fanbase. Opera has made inroads into gaming consoles and mobile platforms including the Wii, Nintendo DS, and approximately 40 million cell phones. So, you'd imagine that Opera would be a perfect match to the iPhone.

Unfortunately, Apple thinks otherwise. A New York Timesstory from this week says that an iPhone version of Opera failed to make it past Apple's gatekeeper, "[Founder Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner] said that Opera's engineers have developed a version of Opera Mini that can run on an Apple iPhone, but Apple won't let the company release it because it competes with Apple’s own Safari browser," theTimes wrote. 

Opera is known for being fast and secure, as well as accessible to a wide range of users. The mobile version of Opera can dynamically reformat web pages to better fit handheld displays using the company's small screen rendering technology. And, even though Opera representatives state that this rejection was due to duplicated functionality, Opera would have had a tough time getting through a different gate: Apple will not allow programs to interpret code. Opera, being a full-featured browser, interprets JavaScript downloaded from the Internet, an absolute App Store no-no.

This isn't the first time that Apple has rejected software for duplicating core functionality. In September, Apple said no to MailWrangler, a program that simplified accessing multiple Gmail accounts. Around the same time, the company also declined to host Al Sokirynsky's Podcaster app, which allowed users to download podcasts and play them on the iPhone. Because of this, we don't find Opera's rejection particularly surprising, although it is a bit disappointing. Mobile Safari is a great mobile platform, but it would have been nice to have an iPhone version of Opera to play around with.

Apple donates $100,000 to defeat California ballot measure

n a rare move, Apple has publicly thrown its hat into the political ring. A post on the company’s Hot News page says that Apple is publicly opposing California’s Proposition 8, a ballot initiative that would ban marriage for same-sex couples. The proposition appears on the California ballot for the November 4th election.

Apple announced it is donating $100,000 to the “No on 8” campaign, citing its history as one of the first California companies to offer equal benefits to its employees’ same-sex partners: “We strongly believe that a person’s fundamental rights—including the right to marry—should not be affected by their sexual orientation. Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8.”

Apple is not the only Silicon Valley company to prominently oppose the ballot measure. The Los Angeles Times reports that Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have also donated a substantial amount of money to the “No on 8” campaign.

Apple made its contribution to the No on 8 campaign public a day after news reports emerged that the group backing Proposition 8 told businesses that have given money to a California gay rights group that they would be publicly identified as opponents of traditional unions—unless they donated a similar amount to the campaign to ban gay marriages.

18 Year Old Targeted in Jobs Heart Attack Rumor

A U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission investigation into a false report that Apple CEO Steve Jobs had a heart attack has been focusing on an 18 year old boy. The teen posted the rumor on CNN's iReport Web site and sent Apple's market value down by some US$4.8 billion in an hour, according to Bloomberg.

The SEC has yet to determine the teen's motive behind the rumor, but at this point it doesn't appear that he was attempting to manipulate Apple's stock value for personal gain.

The bogus report about Mr. Jobs's health appeared on the iReport Web site on the morning of October 3. iReport is CNN's Web site where readers can post their own unverified news stories.

The report said in part "Steve Jobs was rushed to the ER just a few hours ago after suffering a major heart attack. I have an insider who tells me that paramedics were called after Steve claimed to be suffering from severe chest pains and shortness of breath."

Apple representatives publicly denied the heart attack rumor shortly after it surfaced which helped its stock stabilize and begin the slow climb back up to its opening position for the day.

If the SEC determines that the teen's actions weren't intended to manipulate Apple's stock value, it may not have jurisdiction to file charges. That does not, however, preclude other government agencies from pursuing criminal or civil charges in the case.

Ars reviews the 2008 MacBook Pro, Part I: aluminum & glass

A long time coming

A redesign of the MacBook Pro—Apple's professional level notebook—has been a long time coming. The machine's physical design has not changed at all since the MacBook Pro was originally introduced in early 2006 (which, in itself, was barely different than the PowerBook G4 before it), and its internals have only evolved over time. But as of last week's special launch event, Apple has finally answered the call for an updated MacBook Pro, giving its flagship mobile an overhaul on both the outside and the inside.

And boy, are there a lot of changes. A single unibody enclosure. An expanded, button-free trackpad. Multiple GPU units. Oh my! In this two-part review, we'll take a look at the new MacBook Pro in usage scenarios that range from professional to casual to entertainment. Part I of the review focuses on the new features of Apple's latest and greatest, while Part II will focus entirely on benchmarks and performance. (Look for Part II tomorrow.)

Out of the box

Consistent with Apple's latest efforts to reduce the amount of waste it blasts into the environment, Apple has shrunken the MacBook Pro's packaging to be more compact and similar to that of the MacBook. That's fine, because the unboxing experience is just as streamlined as it has ever been.


Smaller packaging = happy environment



Contained within the retail box is the MacBook Pro, a power brick, a power brick extension cord, and a packet of restore discs. Pretty sparse, but also pretty standard. Do you really need much else anyway?

Tech specs

With the new MacBook Pro, you get the option of choosing between a 2.4GHz and 2.53GHz model (the two standard offerings) if you're going for the 15" model. As of this writing, the 17" MacBook Pro has only been "refreshed" and has not received the same updates as the 15" MacBook Pro.

4GB is the max amount of RAM that either machine can support. The hard drives in both can be upgraded to faster and higher-capacity drives, or to a 128GB solid-state drive. Apple has completely eliminated 4200RPM drives across the MacBook Pro line, and all drive sizes are available in up to 7200RPM. The higher-end model's processor can also be upgraded to a 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo for an extra $300.

The MacBook Pro that we're reviewing is the stock $2,499 model. Now, on to what makes this new MacBook Pro so special.

Construction

There are a number of physical differences in the new MacBook Pro that set it apart from the previous model. The new version is just a hair thinner (0.95 inches thick versus 1 inch), but also just a hair wider and deeper. It has gained 0.1 pounds in weight, making the overall size of the machine extremely similar to the last version. Of course, it's still thicker than a MacBook Air and thinner than the old MacBook Pro, but that's to be expected.

However, what truly makes the new model different is its construction, which features a "precision unibody enclosure" that Apple is still busy patting itself on the back over. The entire bezel and frame of the machine is made out of a single block of aluminum, whittled down to the perfect size, shape, and structure for the MacBook Pro. You can check out a video of how the enclosure is made (the same process is used for the new MacBook, Apple's consumer notebook line) on Apple's website.

Look ma, no buttons!

In addition to this new enclosure, Apple has made a pretty significant change to the MacBook Pro's trackpad and button—that is, the button is gone, and the enlarged trackpad is the button. Generally speaking, if you're already used to Apple's trackpads and your thumb knows where to click for the button, things aren't much different.



The entire trackpad gives tactile feedback when clicking, so when you use your thumb to click anywhere in the bottom half of the trackpad, it clicks just like a button would. (In fact, the top part of the trackpad clicks too, but barely). In our experience, we never accidentally clicked it while moving our fingers around the trackpad to navigate across the computer; it's resistant enough to not click while you're using it for tracking, but easy enough to click when you intend to.

The trackpad also knows when you are holding onto something, like a window or a folder. For example, if you are dragging a file across the desktop with your pointer finger and your thumb is holding down the invisible button on the bottom, you can let go with your pointer finger and still be holding onto the file. Move things around all you want just like you would on a normal trackpad, and it'll figure it out.

Texture-wise, the new trackpad feels almost identical to the old trackpad; an observation that Phil Schiller takes huge issue with. We were told that he insists it's "way smoother" than the old trackpad. Going back and forth between an original MacBook Air and the new trackpads seems like no difference to us. It certainly doesn't feel like glass, although that's what it is.

As expected, the trackpads are nice and huge, just like the MacBook Air. The lack of a button can sometimes throw your brain for a loop here and there, but if you choose not to think about it and just go on using the computer as you normally would, it works mostly as expected.

One of our favorite new features of the MacBook Pro's trackpad is the multitouch support, actually, and we're not just talking about using your thumb to hold onto a file while you're dragging it with your pointer finger. Apple has introduced one, two, three, and four-finger multitouch gestures with this machine—more than any previous Mac laptop. The usual ones are all there—two-finger scrolling, pinch and zoom, document rotation, and two-finger-right-click. But now, if you're using a new MacBook Pro, you can also use three fingers to go back and forth in Safari, for example (three finger swipes do different things in different applications). Four finger swipes let you switch between apps like you would with Command+Tab, and four-finger swipes up and down activate Exposé and/or expose your desktop.

This doesn't seem like much to fawn over on paper, but once you get used to some of those four-finger swipes, you'll fall in love. Since a few other Macs (such as the MacBook Air) already have two-finger gesture support, we hope that Apple adds some of this functionality to other machines via Software Update in the near future.

We did run into some trouble with the MacBook Pro's trackpad, however. After installing the Boot Camp drivers in order to run Windows Vista, it became pretty obvious that Apple has not updated these drivers to account for the new TrackPad under Windows. While clicking, double clicking, and dragging are all very fluid under OS X, it was a crapshoot under Vista.

Right clicks, even while holding down the control-button, were erratic. Dragging would drop out in the middle of the action, making it nearly impossible to select a group of files or drag them to the trash. We can only hope that these Windows issues are addressed via an update in the near future. For now, just plan on using an external mouse when you switch operating systems.

The shiny

In a controversial move, Apple now offers only glossy screens on its MacBook Pro line. Previously, customers had a choice between purchasing a glossy or matte screen on this particular notebook line—the MacBook and MacBook Air have long ago gone glossy-only. That trend should have foreshadowed what ended up happening with the MacBook Pro, then, because Apple has decided that matte is out, and glossy is definitely in.

Let's preface this by saying that consumers in general—and especially crotchety Mac users—love arguing about glossy vs. matte. Everyone has their personal preferences, and the matte group is particularly vocal about their intense hatred for Apple's decision.

Apple's excuse for going glossy-only is that there is only a small group of users who still use matte, while the vast ("with a capital V," says Steve Jobs) majority of consumers like the contrast and color pop that glossy screens offer. This we can't argue with. Nearly everyone we spoke to who considers themselves an "average" computer user preferred glossy screens for that exact reason. Where the real argument comes in, at least among our readership and the tech world, is whether glossy is preferable to graphic and video professionals.

To get a true feeling for this, we asked our two resident graphic pros about their opinions on the matter: Ars Creative Director Aurich Lawson and Ars contributor (and magazine creative director) Dave Girard.

First up are Aurich's comments.

Aurich Lawson on glossy vs. matte

Everyone has a preference when it comes to matte versus glossy, and there's no question that in real-world usage in a variety of environments, each has distinctive strengths and weaknesses. You also can't discount the familiarity factor; most people are just used to the look of a matte LCD screen, and that is what feels right to them. Personal preferences aside however, there are some persistent myths about glossy screens that seem to make the rounds every time this debate comes up. Let's examine a couple popular ones.

First up is the person who tries to equate the differences to glossy versus matte paper stock. You simply can't do that. The mediums are just not comparable. One relies on reflective light to carry the image to your eyes, the other emits light. To put it another way, a printed CMYK image relies on subtractive color, while an image on an LCD uses additive color. It is an apples and oranges comparison.

I suspect that the false comparison with the paper stock argument feeds another persistent myth, which is that glossy screens are not for professionals. Let's just leave aside the the fact that an image on a monitor will never entirely match an image printed on paper no matter what kind of screen you have, for a variety of reasons not least amongst them the differences between subtractive and additive color cited above. The simple fact of the matter is that a matte screen, far from a neutral view, is actually distorted when compared to a glossy screen. The matte coating that diffuses glare and reflections also works on the image on the screen, reducing contrast and saturation.

In a properly light-controlled environment (without which there is zero point in talking about professional work), with all tech specs being equal, and with properly calibrated screens, a glossy LCD is going to outperform a matte one every time. This is particularly evident in the higher contrast a glossy screen provides, the deeper blacks are what give it the richer look people often comment on when first exposed to a glossy display. Like any consumer tech this can be abused and cranked up to impress people in stores, but no pro uses a screen the way it comes out of the box.

I think that you can get a glossy screen that has deep blacks, accurate color and a wide gamut, so the problem really is just the glare. It's distracting and for someone like me, who's constantly retouching images and scouring images for dust (next to a window, no less). A glossy screen would make my work a nightmare of squinting and head-bobbing.

I do use an external monitor, but I need to work on the road, and sitting in a café during the day with one of the new machines would be really annoying. Apple should sell one of the new MacBooks with a handy black drape.

Do-it-yourself battery, hard drive, and RAM upgrades

One of the strangest things about Apple's notebook line over the past few years has been the disparity of serviceability between the consumer and pro lines. The MacBook, when introduced, had an exceptionally easy-to-replace hard drive and memory. This stood in stark contrast to the MacBook Pros, which required a steady hand, voiding your warranty, and a handful of tiny screws to keep track of.

Apple has rectified this situation with the new cases, making it super simple to remove and replace the hard drive and even improving upon the old MacBook system in terms of security.

On the new MacBooks, the battery compartment cover is accessed by a pushable latch instead of the traditional rotational system that required a coin. Also new to this system is that when a Kensington lock is attached to the notebook, this latch and the back plate become locked into place. Using a lock on your laptop now makes it much more difficult for a nefarious individual to simply pop out your battery and abscond with your data.

Even if the criminal were able to pry off the back plating (definitely doable with some work), they would need a miniature screwdriver, and even then, the Kensington lock would be holding in place a small metal "tumbler" that locks the hard drive chassis to the frame. The dedicated criminal would have to then be carrying a set of torx screws to get your data. All of this is going to take much more than the two seconds it takes to steal someone's hard drive in the old MacBooks.

Apple has also changed how you upgrade or replace the memory in the new MacBook and MacBook Pro. In the old MacBook Pros, a few screws held closed a small door which exposed the memory to the end user. In the MacBooks, removing the battery itself exposed two latches that ejected the memory.

In the new MacBook Pros, you must remove eight small screws of varying sizes to release the entire back panel of the notebook. This exposes pretty much the entire innards of your computer.

From that point, replacing the memory is just as straightforward as it has always been. One area of error here is dropping the small screws into the chassis and having to hunt around for them. So exercise a little bit more caution when upgrading your memory on these new machines.

Miscellany

Latch-free and lovin' it

With the new MacBook Pro, Apple has finally eliminated the (annoying) mechanical latch that has been persistent throughout the PowerBook and MacBook Pro lines for so many years. While the MacBook and MacBook Air have gotten rid of the mechanical latch ages ago, moving onto a magnetic closure, the MacBook Pro kept it for way too long... until now. Perhaps one of the most welcome "small" changes to the MacBook Pro, the machine now sports an invisible magnetic closure just like its little brothers. Just open and close the notebook—no button-pressing or latch-hooking needed.

DisplayPort

Also new to the MacBook Pro line is the addition of a Mini DisplayPort that replaces the DVI ports offered on older models. DisplayPort may be new to Mac users, but it is actually a standard promoted by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). One of the benefits of DisplayPort is, of course, that it can transmit more bandwidth than DVI and support much larger external displays. It also supports High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) used in many high-def DRM schemes.

The downside, of course, is that DisplayPort is still very young, and Apple is one of the first major computer manufacturers to introduce it to the masses. This means that, in order to use it with all of your old stuff, you're going to have to start buying converters until it becomes more common among your other devices (namely monitors). It does, however, work natively with Apple's newly-introduced 24" display (which will become available next month), and the display is practically designed entirely around the MacBook Pro. If you're not hurting for cash and you want to use an external monitor with your MacBook Pro, it's certainly a very streamlined solution due to the DisplayPort compatibility, USB hub, and MagSafe power built right into the display.

Chiclet keyboard

Here, again, the MacBook pro joins its younger siblings by adopting the new "chiclet" keyboard style that Apple has integrated into the MacBook Air, the MacBook, and the standard keyboards that ship with desktop machines. Not everyone is a fan of this style of keyboard, but we here at Ars are devout followers. We find the flat, nearly silent keys to be a joy to type on, and we're glad that the MacBook Pro has finally joined the rest of the gang in this regard.

The MacBook Pro's keyboard is still LED-backlit just like previous generations. While not entirely necessary, it's a nice touch.

Headphones/Microphone

The MacBook Pro's headphone jack isn't much different than previous generations. However, the MacBook Pro itself now supports the iPhone's clicky headphones that let you skip ahead, pause, play, and skip back tracks just by clicking the little nub on the cord. This is particularly useful if you've got iTunes running in the background while you're working, and you're not in the mood to switch apps (via four-finger multitouch swipe, of course!) just to change tracks.

Additionally, the MacBook Pro's headphone port also appears to support audio-in, meaning that you can use those same iPhone headphones to have a conversation in Skype, for example. We like this little value-added detail.

New Battery Indicator

Apple no longer builds the LED power indicator into the battery units themselves. This undoubtedly increased the complexity of the battery units, but it allowed for individuals with multiple batteries to know at a glance how much charge each unit had without having to plug it into a machine. Now there is a small graphical column of green LEDs along the left side of the MacBook and MacBook Pros that serve this purpose.

Apple Stops Mac Mini Shipments to Retailers, Says to Expect No More


The Mac mini may be pronounced dead as soon as today's Apple earnings conference call, as two major retailers in Europe have confirmed to me that they can't order any more of the little computers. While this could signal an updated model coming in, they have been told by Apple to expect no more of it. Their impression is that—once again—the Mac Mini may be dead dead DEAD for real, even while you can still order it at the Apple Store.

It would be weird to see it go in this time of crisis, but being their worst-selling computer, I'm not surprised.

The Mac mini was first introduced in January 2005 at the Macworld Conference & Expo. Labeled by Steve Jobs as the "most affordable Mac ever" it was well received by the critic and public. Apple positioned it as a cheap alternative to the Mac Pro for every PC user who wanted to switch to the Mac without having to buy new peripherals.

However, the son of the Apple Cube failed to grab traction, just like its predecesor. As the iMac and MacBooks kept being the number one sellers for the Cupertino company, the Mac mini kept receding into the background, even while receiving six hardware updates since its introduction. The last one was in November 2007, and it's quite outdated compared to the current hardware: Unlike the rest of the Mac hardware, it lacks 802.11n support, uses the older 667 MHz front side bus and 945GM chipset, which is two generations behind everything else.

If the termination of the Mac mini is finally confirmed, it will be sad to see it go. Hopefully, this may mean that a new update is in the works or that it will get replaced by something else, but seeing how most people don't seem to give a damn about the Apple Tax, judging from the MacBooks selling like hot cakes at the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue, I won't count on it. New MacBook Pro: now with 20% less battery power

Apple touted some pretty decent battery life numbers at the new MacBook / MacBook Pro press event this week: up to five hours on the Pro with discrete graphics off, and four hours with it on (both surely assuming ideal low-power conditions). One of the things that didn’t come up at the presser, however, was that new MacBook Pro batteries actually have just under 20% less energy than their predecessors. While both kinds of MBP batteries are 10.8v, the old ones are rated at 5600mAh / 60Wh, while the new ones are rated at 4700mAh / 50Wh. (MacBook numbers updated below.)

I’d estimate that the integrated NVIDIA chipset and ever more behind-the-scenes power-saving techniques are why Apple is claiming such solid life despite killing a fifth of the machine’s energy supply — but a 20% reduction is still no small number. It also means that as your new MBP’s battery degrades, you’ll have a smaller pool of potential energy to rely on, meaning you could wind up having to replace your battery more often (although that’s a little conjectural, at this point).

But as some are now postulating, one technique Apple may now be employing to save power is making use of the machine’s GPU(s) to accelerate video playback. We already know that the new MacBooks have a different build of OS X than older gen machines (9F2114), but one thing I also noticed is that Quicktime, the engine behind Apple’s video encodes and decodes, was also revved in the new machines, now clocked in at 7.5.5 995.23.3 up from the last machines’ 990.7. With a little luck, perhaps video encodes will finally be hardware accelerated, too. (Will have to test that one later!)

Update: Matt at Gizmodo mentions that the numbers add up, when comparing the extra 20% battery life you get in new models using the integrated GPU vs. that same five hours claimed in old models using discrete graphics. Also, new MacBooks have also decreased battery capacity (as expected), from 55Wh in last-gen models to 45Wh.

Jobs responds to outrage over MacBook's missing FireWire

In one of his characteristically terse email replies, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs has reportedly told one Mac user that changes in video camera technology have reduced the need for FireWire on his company's 13-inch MacBooks.

The one-line response to a fan complaining over the lack of FireWire on the new entry level aluminum MacBooks is blunt but also points out that technology has changed since the company began including FireWire with Macs in 1999.

"Actually, all of the new HD camcorders of the past few years use USB 2," Jobs supposedly wrote in an email, a copy of which was posted to the popular Flickr image sharing website.

Jobs is likely not pleased about the current state of FireWire himself. Apple invented the standard in the late 80s as a hot pluggable replacement for SCSI, with a special emphasis on supporting media streaming with isochronous, real-time data transfers. The company then released the specification through a standards body to become IEEE 1394, where others including DEC, Texas Instruments, and Sony contributed to its development as well.

Upon returning to the beleaguered Apple in 1997, Jobs hoped to earn Apple some licensing royalties from the technology, which was quickly becoming an emerging standard not just to replace SCSI but also in video and music applications. Jobs' plan resulted in Intel offering to upgrade its USB standard to speeds approaching FireWire at a lower cost. The 'master to slave' USB 2.0 protocol was cheaper to implement than the 'smart peers' design of FireWire because USB required less intelligence in the controllers.

Somewhat ironically, Apple's 1998 iMac originated the push behind USB that allowed it to gain rapid adoption among consumers. USB 2.0 built upon that ubiquity to push into the peripheral territory that had been wholly owned by FireWire. In 2001, Apple's iPod began to popularize FireWire as an interface that was much faster for syncing the then relatively large MP3 files compared to existing players that used USB 1.0. However, by 2003, Apple started adding USB 2.0 support to target PC buyers, where FireWire ports were rare. By the end of 2005, Apple had removed FireWire sync from the iPod line as a cost savings measure.

While USB 2.0 ate into the casual peripheral market for consumer hard drives and web cams, FireWire retracted to support applications where USB 2.0 wasn't suitable. It retains clear advantages over USB 2.0 among higher performance hard drives, but in that market, FireWire is now competing against eSATA, which developed from ATA cabling. Historically, FireWire has been the way to import video from digital cameras, but as Jobs' purported email announced that is no longer always the case.

A glance at the product pages for Canon, Hitachi, JVC, Samsung and Sony as well as Amazon's top camcorder list indicates that virtually all new compact consumer HD cameras now use USB 2.0 to transferring footage directly to a computer instead of the FireWire. Some camcorders also offer the option of burning directly to DVD and a few can transfer video over a USB-to-FireWire bridge cable.

That reality is little comfort to those who fall outside of Apple's market for the new entry-level portables, many of whom are vocal in their opinions in Apple's support discussions as well as AppleInsider's own forums.

Support for older cameras, many of which (particularly DV tape models) depend on FireWire, is ruled out by Apple's aluminum MacBook update; so too are prosumer cameras such as Sony's HDR-FX1000, which needs the faster throughput of FireWire (called i.LINK by Sony) to deliver raw content if a card reader isn't used. To serious amateurs or professionals who prefer a smaller system, the loss of FireWire on the new entry level MacBooks is a vexing problem.

"I am a video producer and use my MacBook on site to ingest footage taken from FireWire cameras, even occasionally hooking the camera right up to the MacBook," says one Mac user with the previous generation system. "Well, it looks like there isn't a FireWire port on it anymore... how the heck am I supposed to do that? I am sure I am not the only one with this concern."

Professional musicians also use FireWire in recording equipment. Others have noted that the lack of FireWire additionally rules out Target Disk Mode for managing files or cloning systems, as USB 2.0's architecture lacks the capacity to support that feature. Apple's Migration Assistant software now alternatively supports importing files from another machine over Ethernet, from USB drives, or Time Machine backups, however.

Even so, many argue that Apple's move appears built to upsell any serious user to the MacBook Pro, which starts at $800 more than the entry level new MacBook, despite the fact that Apple continues to sell the previous-generation white MacBook, with FireWire intact, for $300 less than the new aluminum MacBooks.

There's no doubt that the removal of FireWire from the MacBook was as difficult of a decision for Apple as it is a mourned loss for many Mac users. With FireWire increasingly receding into the professional space, Apple had to weigh several variables, including the cost of incorporating another port to its entry level laptop that many of its new users wouldn't even recognize. After all, half of the buyers Apple is selling to in its retail stores are new to the Mac. Being able to offer them a lower price will likely help more than trying to sell them on the concept of Target Disk mode, which is entirely foreign to PC users.

The future of FireWire is still up in the air. Apple retained the FW800 version (running at 800Mbps, twice the speed of the original specification) on the new MacBook Pro, providing substantially faster throughput than USB 2.0. On the MacBook, FW400 doesn't offer most users enough of an advantage over USB 2.0 to warrant taking up the limited space on the port panel and on the logic board.

"Many of us don't have great confidence that FireWire is here to stay on MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, or iMac, either," one forum user wrote.

With the advancement of USB 2.0 on the low end, erosion from eSATA among hard drives, and a migration away from FireWire even in its home field advantage among digital video users, Apple is probably wondering the same thing.

MacBook Pro Does Not Support Both GPUs Simultaneously

When Apple introduced new MacBook Pro notebooks with two types of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) from NVIDIA, many wondered if both GPUs could be used simultaneously. NVIDIA's Hybrid SLI/GeForce Boost technology allows some notebook configurations to use one or both of a notebook's GPUs. When both GPUs are utilized simultaneously, the user can see dramatic performance boosts.

NVIDIA has since clarified that the new MacBook Pro only supports the ability to switch between the integrated and discrete GPUs for power conservation ("HybridPower"), but does not allow the use of both at the same time ("GeForce Boost"):

Apple's Macbook Pro (Late 2008) does feature both the NVIDIA® GeForce®9400M motherboard GPU for everyday computing and the NVIDIA® GeForce® 9600M GT discrete GPU for high graphics performance. You can switch between the Geforce 9400M motherboard GPU (called energy saver mode) and the Geforce 9600M GT discrete GPU (called performance mode), but you cannot use both GPU's at once in this implementation.

In fact, it's been revealed that switching between the two GPUs on the MacBook Pro requires the user to log out of Mac OS X. Apparently, other implementations of NVIDIA's Hybrid SLI allows on-the-fly switching between GPUs, so it's not clear if this limitation in the MacBook Pro is a software or hardware issue.

This inability to use both GPUs simultaneously appears to be a hardware limitation and unlikely to be improved in future software updates.

topright Leaked MacBook Pro Photo, No Physical Trackpad Buttons [Updated]

Engadget posts two photos of what appears to be the new MacBook Pro. The new Macbook Pro has a black bezel similar to the iMac. Also, of note is that there are no buttons on the MacBook Pro trackpad, indicating the use of a "tap" system instead.

...that "metal and glass" enclosure now houses an NVIDIA GPU, but no FireWire 400, and video-out is apparently through a connector "more compact" than MicroDVI.


There are said to be two NVIDIA GPUs inside, indicating both integrated and discrete graphics chipsets.

They have since updated and say that the MacBook and 17" MacBook Pro will not be refreshed tomorrow and that the notebook containts "two full-on NVIDIA GPUs". While no 17" MacBook Pro would not necessarily be a surprise, it's hard to believe the MacBook will not be updated tomorrow.

Apple Migrating to NVIDIA Chipsets in new MacBooks

Appleinsider reports that they have "confirmed" that the new MacBooks will utilize NVIDIA's new MCP79 platform. While Intel will continue to supply the main processor for Apple's notebooks, the underlying support chips will be made by NVIDIA:

Kept uncharacteristically secret by NVIDIA for most of the year, the MCP79 platform is so far considered a substitute for Intel's Centrino 2 "Montevina" platform, offering support for the same 1066MHz front side bus, optional DDR3 memory and PCI Express 2.0 interfaces.

AppleInsider lists several design advantages over Intel's chipset, including:

- Smaller physical size using one chip rather than two
- DriveCache, which uses Flash storage to speed up boot times
- Hybrid SLI which switches from discrete to integrated graphics when battery is low

Apple may or may not choose to take advantage of these technologies, but the option exists. The biggest advantage in using the NVIDIA chipset, however, will be its enhanced graphics capabilities.

NVIDIA is believed to use a new set of GeForce 9300 and 9400 series integrated GPUs which "will theoretically blow past" the Intel integrated graphics chipsets that currently power Apple's MacBooks. Still, the integrated graphics chipsets will lag behind the dedicated ones that are used in Apple's higher-end notebooks. The use of NVIDIA chipsets will also be of importance when Apple releases Snow Leopard, which will be able to offload general processing onto GPUs.

While there had been speculation that Apple might adopt NVIDIA's chipsets, Mac Soda first reported confidently that the chipset would be NVIDIA's.

Calacanis: Apple to release networked HDTVs

Yesterday I spent a couple of hours here at the office with Valleywag's most cherished and adored tech celebrity, Jason Calacanis. Love him or hate him, the bloke's got contacts, and he confirmed to me that he knew first-hand that Apple was working on a networked television.

These LCD HDTVs will be fully networked, with the ability to stream all your iTunes content from your Mac or PC. In fact, Calacanis told me they'll function like a standard TV with an Apple TV box, only without the need for the box.

In many ways, this isn't surprising news, as Apple already produces a stunning 30-inch display for the Mac. So picture that -- only thinner -- in a bedroom, streaming iTunes movie rentals over 802.11n, controlled with the Remote app on an iPod touch or iPhone.

Apple has really gone to town with the iTunes Store, securing movie downloads, rentals and a massive archive of TV shows, new and old. Why would it sit back while movie fans go out and buy some generic HDTV to connect up to their PC to watch this content, when it already has the means to provide a complete package itself?

TVs are a huge market. What better way to extend the iTunes Store than by providing an elegant TV that seamlessly integrates with its movie and TV offerings? Apple Computer Inc dropped the 'Computer' for a reason, and I have no reason to doubt that this has been on the roadmap ever since.

MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues

Symptoms

In July 2008, NVIDIA publicly acknowledged a higher than normal failure rate for some of their graphics processors due to a packaging defect. At that same time, NVIDIA assured Apple that Mac computers with these graphics processors were not affected. However, after an Apple-led investigation, Apple has determined that some MacBook Pro computers with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor may be affected. If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within two years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty.

What to look for:

  • Distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen
  • No video on the computer screen (or external display) even though the computer is on

Specific products affected:

  • MacBook Pro 15-inch and 17-inch models with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processors
    • MacBook Pro (17-Inch, 2.4GHz)
    • MacBook Pro (15-Inch, 2.4/2.2GHz)
    • MacBook Pro (Early 2008)
  • These computers were manufactured between approximately May 2007 and September 2008
