HTC Increases Google Phone Sales Forecasts

Taiwan's High Tech Computer (HTC) expects cumulative shipments of T-Mobile's G1 Google Phone to reach one million units by the end of 2008. The firm also expects to ship some three million units of its Windows Mobile based Touch Diamond smartphone.

The company had previously said that it expected sales of the T-Mobile phone to be in the region of 500,000 units by the end of this year - rising to between 1.5 and 2 million units by the end of 2009.

Recent research from Strategy Analytics reported that the Android operating system will account for 4 percent of all smartphones sold in the United States during the fourth quarter of 2008.

Neil Mawston, Director, Wireless Device Strategies at Strategy Analytics, said, “We forecast 10.5 million smartphones to be sold in the United States during Q4 2008. We estimate smartphones with Google’s Android operating system, led by HTC of Taiwan, will reach 0.4 million units in the quarter, for a 4 percent marketshare. Android is a relatively late entrant and it will join an increasingly crowded market alongside Blackberry, Microsoft, Apple, Palm, Symbian and LiMo.”

HTC's CEO Peter Chou also told DigiTimes that the company is not laying off staff - refuting some recent news reports. Chou also revealed that HTC is planning to acquire a handset design company in the USA but did not give any further details.

Opera Mini browser available for Google Android


The latest version of the popular mobile browser Opera Mini is now available for the T-Mobile G1, the first phone built on Google’s Android operating system. The Android availability is part of the improvements in Opera Mini 4.2, which leaves testing mode tomorrow.

Opera Mini is the first alternative G1 users have to the phone’s built-in browser, which is based on WebKit. Matthew Miller of ZDNet spotted Mini in the Android Market this morning, and reports that it provides “very fast” internet access, and has the added benefit of synchronizing Opera bookmarks across multiple devices. It’s also just nice to have multiple browsers to choose from, similar to the freedom of choice you have on your desktop or laptop computer. If Opera Mini takes off among Android users, that would be a rebuke to Apple, which rejected the browser as a competitor to Safari on the iPhone. (I asked Opera if there are any plans to bring its higher-end Opera Mobile browser to the Android, but the company isn’t commenting.)

The latest version of Mini has been in public testing for about two weeks, and other new features include the ability to customize the browser with new skins, additional languages (including Armenian, Bengali and Urdu), improved video, and note syncing via Opera Link. When 4.2 was announced, the update didn’t seem terribly exciting, but the just-revealed Android support changes things.

With more than 20 million users worldwide, Opera says Mini it’s the world’s most popular mobile web browser.

Blogger says G1 multitouch capable

From the very beginning, Android has planned to support multitouch. The G1's touch screen is a ClearPad, created by Synaptics—a founding member of the Open Handset Alliance. Synaptics provides the touch interface driver for Android, and will at some time offer "advanced multi-touch gestures for the Android platform." Over at the RyeBlog, blogger RyeBrye has tapped into the unit's multitouch capabilities.

Synaptics offers a touch module that supports a number of single touch and multitouch gestures that include tapping, pressing, flicking and pinching. This gesture support requires no additional interpretation software on the host end, helping to lower processor demands for the screen's host.

RyeBrye writes that by uncommenting critical lines in the Synaptics driver and recompiling the kernel, he replaced his boot image with a version that supported two finger tracking and debug logging. He posted that the feedback returned by the driver includes position information along with finger width and a finger number. The number allows you to track more than one finger at a time.

He then went ahead and tested a variety of one and two finger gestures. He has pastebinned the debugging output for a half dozen tests, so you can review the data yourself to confirm how the G1 screen tracks two fingers.

As to why the G1 does not officially support multitouch at this time, RyeBrye relates feedback from a Google employee speaking off-the-record. That employee suggests that the G1 specs do not specify anything but a single touch screen, so in the future they might source screens without the built-in multitouch capacity. That makes the multitouch capabilities of the current G1 run a nice extra rather than a necessary component for future production lines. At this time, Synaptics is the sole touch interface company in the Android alliance.

China Mobile to Introduce G1

China Mobile is in talks with Google to introduce Android-based G1 mobile phone to China, but it is unlikely to be done before the end of this year, according to Kai-Fu Lee, chief executive officer of Google China.

It calls for close cooperation among Google, the telecom carrier and third-party handset partners to carry it out, says Mr. Lee.

Some local reports say that China Mobile is working closely now with a research team of Google China to lay the groundwork for introduction of G1.

The debut of G1 offers China Mobile an alternative to Apple's iPhone and enables it to demand more when negotiating with Apple for introduction of iPhone. China Mobile has been in talks with Apple since last year about introduction of iPhone.

Analysts say that G1 is most likely to gain the lead to hit the mainland market given China Mobile is a member of the Open Handset Alliance.

In comparison with G1, iPhone's biggest disadvantage is its exorbitant price. Though iPhone has a cool-looking appearance and a perfect interface, it is not open, says Mr. Lee.

Google officially launched G1 on October 22 along with telecom carriers T-Mobile and HTC. The phone was merely priced at USD 179.

Shortly after the launch of G1, Google announced a cooperation agreement with china Mobile, says Mr. Lee. China Mobile will be among the increasing number of mobile phone makers to adopt Android mobile phone operating system.

Lenovo Mobile, the mobile phone unit of Lenovo Group, is scheduled to a Android-powered smartphone along with China Mobile in 2009, disclosed Wang Yan, general manager of the marketing department of Lenovo Mobile during the 17th Beijing International Telecom Expo.

China Mobile is the only Chinese member of OHA, which was set up by over 30 IT heavyweights such as Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, and LG. Besides members of OHA, other mobile phone makers can also use Android. The operating system is even available to knock-off handsets rolled out by lesser-known manufacturers in China.

Some say that G1 would not be an iPhone killer. Now that they have had a few days with the first Google Android powered handset, their views have stayed the same.

The Times do acknowledge that the G1 is a good smartphone, and is in the same class as the Apple iPhone, but still has a few niggles that lets it down. Where the G1 wins over the iPhone is the choice of using the touch screen or the QWERTY keypad, great if you hate using a touch screen all of the time.

Firefox Mobile Won't Be Foxing Up Android Anytime Soon

Often, when people carp about Mobile Firefox or Opera not being able to run on the iPhone 'cause of Apple's SDK restrictions, they'll point to Android and say "I can't wait for Mobile Firefox on Android" or some variation of that, since Android theoretically doesn't have any limitations. I've got some bad news for those people. Firefox Mobile (aka Fennec) isn't coming to Android anytime soon.

The issue, which we discussed in our primer on what sucks about programming for Android, is that everything has to be written in a custom form of Java to run on Android. And Mozilla's Jay Sullivan says they aren't playing that—there won't be Mobile Firefox on Android until Google accepts programs not written in Java. And uh, that could take a long, long while. Anyone else sorely, bruisingly disappointed? Cause that basically leaves Symbian S60 and Windows Mobile as the only places to get your Firefox Mobile on. [ABC News via Android Community]

Debian ported to G1


Over the weekend, a major G1 bug came to light. So what do you suppose happened when you typed Linux commands into any Android program under firmware 1.0 TC-RC29? According to Ed Burnette over at ZDNet, youexecuted them. Every keystroke was echoed to a root-authorized command shell. Typing telnetd started the telnet daemon. Typing reboot meant that, well, you needed to wait for a few seconds while your phone rebooted.

On the one hand, this was pretty hideously awful news for Google who went to work to push out a patched update. On the other, it was great news for the jailbreak crowd who used it to enable the telnet shell and sneak their way into the G1's innards. With that in mind, Jay "saurik" Freeman took the G1's shell to the next level. He got Debian Linux running on his G1 under RC29. Debian takes you past what Freeman calls "Google's overly simplistic busybox replacement, toolbox" and into real Unix-land.

Freeman posted complete instructions for building and installing the Debian image. Once installed on the G1, you can set up OpenSSH and start pulling down real software. If you're interested in getting your hands dirty and playing with Debian-on-G1, Freeman has set up aG1-Hackers mailing list, where you can find like-minded individuals to chat with.

As for that bug? It's been fixed and the patch has been pushed out in the RC30 build. That patch kills the Android jailbreak. Or at least it does for anyone who allows it to be installed.

For those who installed the jailbreak and could patch their systems to deny the update, RC30 has already been "defeated". Given root access, hackers figured out how to changethe accepted signatures and reject the RC30 update. Then Fnorder, a G1 hacker, made amodified version of RC30 with a setuid shell in it. Later, Jesus Freke created a full RC30 replacement version with even more features; it has become the customized update of choice. So if you take pre-emptive action from a pre-RC30 G1, you can work around the patch. If you own an RC30 G1, you're out of luck for the moment.

Google patches up Android jailbreak with RC30 update



As you may have noticed, Google doesn't exactly seem to be hesitant about pushing out Android updates, and it looks like it's now at it again, letting the new RC30 update slip out just days after folks finally figured out what the mysterious RC29 update actually did. This particular update is decidedly less mysterious, however, with Google saying up front that it had been notified of the jailbreaking issuewith Android and has developed a "fix," adding that it is "currently working with our partners to push the fix out and updating the open source code base to reflect these changes." No word on any other changes included in the update, but it's supposedly on an "accelerated release" and should be in everyone's hands within the next the three or four days.

Hop-on questions Sprint; spills beans about future Android-powered handsets

Hop-on has reason to believe that the reason Sprint’s CEO Dan Hesse is dismissing Google’s Android Platform, despite being on of the founders of the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), is not because it is not good enough for the Sprint name, but because Sprint will lose market share.

According to Hop-on, Sprint has invested billions of dollars into their own network that they don’t want to loose their customer base to an open platform. Sprint should be one of the first service providers offering an Android-powered handset because they helped create the OHA. Peter Michaels President and CEO of Hop-on stated, “This is their Mission Statement and although Sprint is one of the founding members it has not cooperated in bringing their vision to fruition.”

Michaels asks, “Why doesn’t Sprint find a way to embrace the Android platform and find another revenue stream from it? Sprint has made it difficult to bring CDMA technologies from smaller vendors onto their network. CDMA is the best technology in the world, hands down. Hop-on could have brought in a low-end $10 CDMA, minimum, subsidized phone for Sprint, but they didn’t allow it. Hop-on is embracing advancing technology, Sprint is not!”

Hop-on will be releasing two versions of the Android phone, one will be multimedia based ad have GPS tracking, the other will be a standard Android OS phone. Bother phones will utilize the technology developed by Motorola to place free calls from the modem located in your home. “We want to sell our phones to the Cable TV companies, such as Cox and Time-Warner, and even the Satellite TV guys!” said Michaels.

Young Aussie first to announce Android-powered handset in Australia

A small consumer electronics maker in Melbourne Australia, who’s specialty is undercutting big brands, has become the first to announce that they will be selling an Android-powered handset in Australia. While the idea doesn’t sound like the most appealing idea to many customers, his track record proves that he knows what he is doing.

Ruslan Kogan, 25 – has been selling cut-priced Kogan-branded TV sets, GPS devices as well as many other electronics on the internet for the past two and a half years. He claims to be offering his Android-powered handset by December 5th for a mere $199. Currently Aussies are purchasing the G1 on Ebay for $1,000, so this is a welcome alternative to many.

No mobile phone manufacturer has yet announced plans to release an Android-powered handset in Australia. Kogan claims his Android-powered handset will be similar to the iPhone including a touch-screen. The phone will have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and like the T-Mobile G1 a trackball for easy navigation. Kogan said, “We’ve got a few designs that we can easily choose from. We know the components that’s going to go into the phone.

The private company, Kogan Technologies has made about $8 million last year alone. The company is on track to increase sales by between $15 and $20 million this year. With such substantial growth and Android being quiet till next year, we would not be surprised if Kogan’s Android phone is a hit in Australia. For those of you located in Australia, would you buy a phone from a manufacturer such as this, or spend $1000 on an imported G1?

Motorola Delays Cell-Phone Spinoff, Drops Platforms

Motorola confirmed Thursday that it will eliminate its MOTOMAGX and Symbian platforms in order to focus on the Google Android, Windows Mobile, and P2K 3G solutions. The company will also delay plans to spin off its mobile business into a separate entity.

The company is moving more toward a mobile Internet environment, Sanjay Jha, co-chief executive of Motorola and chief executive of mobile devices, said during Motorola's Thursday earnings call.

"We have invested for a long period of time in our Linux Java [MOTOMAGX] platform, [but] we see large eco-systems [now focusing their efforts on] mobile Internet, and that is going to be more important as we go forward," Jha said.

Part of the reason for the decision may be the company's red ink in its mobile devices business. Motorola lost $397 million on revenue of $7.5 billion, a 15 percent loss in revenue from a year ago, when Motorola reported a $60 million profit. But the Mobile Devices group reported sales of $3.1 billion, down 31 percent compared to the year-ago quarter. The segment reported an operating loss of $840 million, compared to an operating loss of $248 million in the year-ago quarter, the company said.

Jha expects that the company's investments in Linux "can bring to bear in the Android platform. One of the things that we need to do better is execution on our software strategy," he said.

Motorola will open a new office in Seattle "in order to work closely with Microsoft to deliver differentiation" via the Windows Mobile platform, he said.

Motorola expects to release a phone based on Windows Mobile 6.5 platform in the second half of 2009, and an Android-based device for the 2009 holiday season.

"I think that that will reduce the number of phones that will launch at least in the second or third quarters of next year, but I think thereafter, we expect that using Android and Windows Mobile, to be able to address larger portion of the mid- and high-tier market," Jha said.

The first half of 2009 will be "challenging" for Motorola, he said. The company plans to reduce the number of products it launches in the first half of next year, but "we won't provide you any guidance" on volume reduction, Jha said.

Reductions that are already underway will be global in nature and affect all businesses, supply chains, and corporate functions, according to Motorola. Those moves will result in $800 million in savings for 2009.

Earlier this month, Motorola unveiled its touch-screen Krave ZN4, viewed as a possible competitor to Apple's iPhone.

Jha acknowledged that there has been a "little too much focus on bright shiny objects [and] not enough focus on the user experience."

"Windows Mobile 6 has not delivered the experience that I think Apple has been able to deliver, but as you look at the plan that is Windows Mobile 7 and even 6.5, I think there are significant new added features which will help the platform," Jha said. "We have now targeted new teams which are focused – in California and Seattle – to deliver experiences. That is where we have to differentiate."

The company also said it will delay plans to spin off its handset business into a separate entity indefinitely until the market improves. The plan, announced in March, was supposed to result in two separate divisions – Mobile Devices and Broadband & Mobility Solutions – by next year.

"The environment just isn't conducive to pursuing [the separation, due to the] global economy and stressed financial markets, but we remain committed to that," said Greg Brown, co-chief executive of Motorola and chief executive of broadband mobility solutions.

Meanwhile, Motorola will focus on Texas Instruments and Qualcomm as its "preferred chipset suppliers" for the next two years. Motorola has also worked with Freescale Semiconductor, which was spun off from Motorola in 2004 and taken private in a 2006, but Freescale announced earlier this month that it was looking to exit the cell phone chip business.

ASUS said to be launching Android handset in first half of '09

We'd already heard that ASUS had been invited to join the Open Handset Alliance, and DigiTimes is now reporting that the company is, in fact, planning to launch an Android-based handset -- go figure. That phone, some unnamed company sources say, will roll out sometime in the first half of 2009 (we're guessing late first half), and could possibly be released in Taiwan first under ASUS' own brand before making its way overseas in the form of different "customized models" for various clients. Of course, any other details are non-existent at this point, but those same sources did also note that ASUS will be phasing out its use of the Ericsson Mobile Platform (or EMP) in its phones in favor of handset platforms from Qualcomm and Marvell, which is interesting insofar as that both Qualcomm and Marvell are members of the OHA, while Ericsson is not.

Android Market: Now available for users

Last month I outlined some details around Android Market. Today, Android Market launched for users to download applications along with the first Android-powered phone—the T-Mobile G1.

With Android Market, users can easily download apps to their Android-powered phone. Users can also rate the apps they've downloaded and leave comments. These users' ratings along with anonymous usage statistics help determine how apps are ranked and presented within Android Market.

If you're a developer, you will be able to register and upload your applications starting next Monday, 2008-10-27, when we've wrapped up a few final details. In order to make sure that each developer is authenticated and responsible for their apps, you will need to register and pay a one time $25 application fee. Once registered, your apps can be made available to users without further validation or approval.

Starting in early Q1, developers will also be able to distribute paid apps in addition to free apps. Developers will get 70% of the revenue from each purchase; the remaining amount goes to carriers and billing settlement fees—Google does not take a percentage. We believe this revenue model creates a fair and positive experience for users, developers, and carriers.

There are already over 50 apps available in Android Market today. You can view a showcase of some of these apps—which include multimedia, location-based tools, barcode scanners, travel guides and games—at http://www.android.com/market/. Now that Android Market is live and ready for contributions, we hope to see developers adding their own compelling apps starting next week.

In the coming months, we'll continue to roll out additional tools and enhancements to Android Market. We also expect to see additional Android-powered devices rolling out by different carriers around the world. Starting today, you can get a device, test your apps on it, and get them ready for upload. Android Source-Code released: Google keep Open-Source promise

Google have, as promised, released the Android source-code for their mobile platform. Timed to coincide with the launch of the T-Mobile G1, the first commercially released Android device, the source-code will allow developers and OEMs to create software and new devices. In addition, Google are hoping that the software community will feed back into the Android project, adding fresh functionality and driving platform innovation.

Until now, access to the Android SDK was limited to certain developers and testers; from now, however, it will available to anybody who wishes to download it. The move stands in complete contrast to Apple, whose iPhone OS is both a closed environment and a strongly guarded one. Google, however, are actively encouraging coders to manipulate, change and improve the Android source-code; indeed, some functionality, including on on-screen QWERTY keyboard, will not be present in Android v.1 out of the box, and require a third-party to develop.

Motorola Readies Its Own Android Social Smartphone

As the wireless world awaits the Oct. 22 debut of the first phone based on the Google-backed Android software, engineers at Motorola (MOT) are hard at work on their own Android handset. Motorola's version will boast an iPhone-like touch screen, a slide-out qwerty keyboard, and a host of social-network-friendly features, BusinessWeek.com has learned.

Motorola has been showing spec sheets and images of the phone to carriers around the world in the past two months and is likely to introduce the handset in the U.S. sometime in the second quarter of 2009, according to people familiar with Motorola's plans. Building a phone based on the highly anticipated Android operating system is part of Motorola's effort to revive a loss-making handset division that has forfeited market share amid a drought of bestselling phones. Motorola stock, which on Oct. 17 rose a penny to 5.62, is hovering near a 16-year low.

The phone will appear among a new class of social smartphones designed to make it easy for users to connect quickly and easily to mobile social networks such as Facebook and News Corp.'s (NWS) MySpace (BusinessWeek, 10/10/08). Such phones let users message in-network friends directly from phone contact lists, for example. A Facebook representative declined to comment on the company's work with Motorola. MySpace.com didn't respond to a request for comment.

Motorola declined to elaborate on its plans, but said in a statement: "We're excited about the innovation possibilities on Android and look forward to delivering great products in partnership with Google (GOOG)" and the community of developers known as the Open Handset Alliance that are working on the Android operating system.

In the next year, social networking phones are expected to be a hit with the 16- to 34-year-old crowd, analysts say. According to consultancy Informa (INF), the number of mobile social-networking users will rise from 2.3% of global cell-phone users at the end of 2007 to as many as 23% of all mobile users by the end of 2012.

The Android handset will feature a touch screen about the size of those on Apple's (AAPL) iPhone, people familiar with the phone say. While it takes some of the design cues from Krave ZN4, the first touch-screen phone from Motorola launched with Verizon Wireless on Oct. 14, it's not certain whether the Android phone screen will feature Krave's distinctive and interactive clear flip screen.

Like the world's first Android phone, from HTC, Motorola's Android-based device will offer a slide-out Qwerty keyboard. People who've seen the pictures and spec sheets for the device say it looks like a higher-end version of the HTC phone, called the T-Mobile G1. But it's expected to sell for less, at prices similar to the Krave, which is available for $150 with a two-year contract. After carrier subsidies, the G1 will retail for $180 with a two-year contract.

Google Answers the iPhone

n the exciting new category of modern hand-held computers — devices that fit in your pocket but are used more like a laptop than a traditional phone — there has so far been only one serious option. But that will all change on Oct. 22, when T-Mobile and Google bring out the G1, the first hand-held computer that’s in the same class as Apple’s iPhone.

I have been testing the G1 extensively, in multiple cities and in multiple scenarios. In general, I like it and consider it a worthy competitor to the iPhone. Both devices run on fast 3G phone networks and include Wi-Fi. Both have smart-touch interfaces and robust Web browsers. Both have the ability to easily download third-party apps, or programs.

But the two devices have different strengths and weaknesses, and are likely to attract different types of users.

If you’ve been lusting after the iPhone’s functionality, but didn’t like its virtual keyboard or its user interface or its U.S. carrier, AT&T, the G1 may be just the ticket for you. But it does have some significant downsides.

By far, the G1’s biggest differentiator is that it has a physical keyboard, which is revealed by sliding open the screen. The keyboard proved only fair in my tests, with keys that are too flat and that can be hard to see in bright light, and with a bulge in the body on the right side that you have to reach over to type. But, for the many people who can’t stomach typing on glass, the G1 keyboard will be a welcome sight. It’s complemented by a BlackBerry-like trackball for navigation.


The G1 has a smart-touch screen like its iPhone rival, for Web browsing and downloading programs. But it has a physical keyboard for conventional typing.

The G1 has a removable battery and uses removable, expandable memory cards. And it’s even a bit cheaper than its Apple (AAPL) rival: $179 versus $199. Its data plan also costs less — $25 a month versus $30 — and includes 400 free text messages, which cost extra on the iPhone. There’s also a $35 plan that includes unlimited text messages. And both plans include free use of T-Mobile’s Wi-Fi hotspots.

The G1 has a slick, clever touch interface to go along with its keyboard, and it includes a powerful new operating system. The operating system, called Android, was built by Google (GOOG). It is slated to appear on other phones over time, though it likely will look different on other devices because it is fully open to modification by other companies.

On the G1, the touch interface is fast and smooth. Programs appear when you drag up a tab at the bottom of the screen, and notifications of new messages can be read by simply dragging down the top bar of the screen.

You get much more flexibility in organizing your desktop than on the iPhone. In addition to placing icons for programs there, you can add individual contacts, music playlists, folders, Web pages and more. You just press on the screen for a longer-than-usual time, and a list of items you can add appears. It also has a higher-resolution camera than the iPhone, but like the Apple phone, it can’t shoot video.

It’s also much easier to place a phone call on the G1 than on the iPhone. You can just start typing a contact name or phone number while on the home screen, sparing you the need to enter the phone or contacts program. And there’s a virtual phone keypad that allows you to avoid opening the physical keyboard just to dial a number. It’s also much easier to jump to the top and bottom of long lists.

The G1’s Web browser, built on the same technology as the iPhone’s, worked well at rendering scores of common sites in my tests. You can either pan around pages with your finger, or choose to view the whole page at once and zero-in on a section by moving a small rectangle around.

This first Android phone, which was largely designed by Google and built by Taiwan-based HTC, also includes some key features Apple omitted. These include a limited ability to copy and paste text, and the ability to send photos directly to other phones without relying on email, a common phone feature called MMS, or Multimedia Messaging Service. And, unlike AT&T (T), T-Mobile (DT) will even allow users to legally unlock the phone after 90 days and start using it on another carrier, provided you pay a hefty early-termination fee.

In my battery tests, the G1 lasted through the day, but I had to charge it every night. That’s better than the initial battery life on the current iPhone, though in fairness, Apple has improved the iPhone’s battery life through software updates, and I found them to be about the same for mixed use.

In my talk-time test, the G1 got just under its claimed five hours, about 19 minutes better than the iPhone.

There are two email programs: one for Google’s Gmail, another for all other email services. There’s an instant-messaging program that works with multiple services. There’s one program for accessing Google’s YouTube service and another for Google Maps. The G1’s Google Maps program even has a feature, coming soon as well to the iPhone, that offers photographic street views of certain locations. But the G1, unlike the iPhone, includes a compass that orients the street views as you walk.

The built-in download store for third-party programs, called Market, worked well in my tests. I was able to quickly download games, productivity programs, and other apps and, unlike Apple, Google says it isn’t blocking any programs.

However, the G1 also has downsides. It’s a chunky brick of a device. While it’s a bit narrower than the iPhone and feels OK in the hand, it’s almost 20% heavier and nearly 30% thicker. It also has a smaller screen and doesn’t accept standard stereo headphones.

The G1 also skimps on memory. It comes with only 1 gigabyte of storage, just one-eighth of what the base iPhone offers. To increase the G1’s memory, you have to lay out more money to buy a larger memory card.

The G1 also limits third-party applications to a paltry 128 megabytes of memory. At one point in my tests, after downloading a bunch of third-party programs, and adding songs and videos, the G1 warned me it was running out of room, a warning I have never seen on my heavily used iPhone.

Another downside for some users: The G1 is tightly tied to Google’s online services. While you can use non-Google email and IM services, the only way you can get contacts and calendar items into the phone is to synchronize with Google’s online calendar and contacts services. In fact, you can’t even use the G1 without a Google user ID and password.

The G1 doesn’t allow the use of Microsoft’s Exchange service for email, contacts or calendar items, or any other company’s over-the-air synchronization for contacts and appointments.

In my tests, synchronizing with Gmail, and with Google’s contacts and calendar applications, was smooth and fast. So, the G1 may be great for dedicated Google users, but not so good for folks who rely on competing calendar and contacts services from, say, Yahoo (YHOO) or Microsoft (MSFT). Future Android phones may not be so tightly tied to Google services, but the G1 is.

It also can’t synchronize any data at all directly with a PC or Mac. For instance, it can’t sync with Microsoft Outlook or Windows Media Player on a PC, with Apple’s iCal or Address Book programs on a Mac, or with iTunes on either Windows or the Mac. It has no PC-based synchronization software of its own, and it offers no way to automatically back up your settings, music, applications, videos or photos, either to a computer or to an online repository, though Google says it plans to add a backup feature.

To get Outlook or iCal data onto the G1, you must install add-on software. To get your songs, videos and photos onto the G1, you must plug the phone, or its memory card, into your computer and manually move the files over.

Overall, I found the G1’s user interface inferior to the iPhone’s. It lacks the iPhone’s ability to flick between multiple pictures and Web pages, or to zoom in and zoom out of a photo or Web page by simply using two fingers to “pinch” or expand the image. It also doesn’t automatically change the orientation of the screen from portrait to landscape simply by turning the phone.

Further, many common controls that are easily visible on the iPhone can be accessed on the G1 only by pressing a menu button or by using keyboard shortcuts you have to memorize. Examples are stopping the loading of a Web page or moving forward to the next Web page.

There’s also no on-screen keyboard even for quick tasks, such as typing Web addresses, so you’re constantly having to turn the phone and open the physical keyboard, which quickly becomes a pain.

The G1 also is a greatly inferior multimedia device when compared with the iPhone. Its music player, while adequate, isn’t as nice as the built-in iPod on the iPhone. And it lacks a video player altogether, though a rudimentary one can be downloaded from the Market. The G1 does come with a program for buying songs from Amazon (AMZN), which worked well in my tests.

And then there’s the network. Despite all the troubles AT&T has experienced with its fast 3G network, which is still being built out, that company has 3G service for the iPhone and other devices in 320 U.S. metro areas. By contrast, T-Mobile offers 3G in just 20 U.S. metro areas. Eight more cities are due to come online by year end, which will still leave T-Mobile’s 3G coverage far behind that of AT&T and Verizon (VZ), which will soon introduce its own iPhone competitor, the BlackBerry Storm.

I did 40 speed tests comparing the G1 and the iPhone to see how fast they could download a Web page over 3G. The tests, conducted in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Washington, D.C., showed the iPhone to be consistently faster, by an average of between 50 and 100 kilobytes per second, even though T-Mobile’s network was carrying much less traffic than AT&T’s.

Overall, the G1 is a very good first effort, and a godsend for people who prefer physical keyboards or T-Mobile but want to be part of the new world of powerful pocket computers.

Google outs remote kill switch in Android, those rascals

Remember the outrage at Apple's inclusion of a sneaky application kill switch in the iPhone 3G? Yeah, well, Google's got one too. This time, however, it wasn't discovered by some meddling developer, Google owns up to it from right inside the Android Market terms of service:
"Google may discover a product that violates the developer distribution agreement ... in such an instance, Google retains the right to remotely remove those applications from your device at its sole discretion"
Google then claims that it will make "reasonable efforts to recover the purchase price of the product ... from the original developer on your behalf." This on top of the Android Market's policy which allows you to "return" (er, how, it's electronic?) any application within 24 hours for a full refund. Aw shucks Google, come over here and give us a hug.

Microsoft: Apple Not Interested in Silverlight, Flash for iPhone

According to Microsoft’s latest Silverlight announcement, Apple shows little to no interest in installing either Silverlight or Adobe Flash on its iPhones.

Thanks to the open source nature of Google’s mobile operating system Android, on the other hand, Silverlight on a Google-enabled phone is a prospective possibility for Microsoft — one they’d be eager to jump on.

“Basically where we’re at right now is we have talked with Apple,” Microsoft Vice President Scott Guthrie admitted. “We are very interested in being able to run [Silverlight] on the iPhone. At the end of the day, Apple ultimately controls what software runs on the iPhone. To date, what they’ve said is that at this time, they’re not looking to enable browser plug-ins like Silverlight or Flash to run on top of it.”

Microsoft’s perspective mirrors Adobe’s. However, according to Guthrie, Apple apparently hasn’t completely slammed the door to third-party vendors yet.

“They might in the future, but right now it isn’t an option for any vendor and so if they let us we’ll definitely come. Until they open it up to third-party plug-ins, like Silverlight and Flash, we’re both prevented from running there.”

The story is radically different for Google’s Android, the increasingly popular mobile operating system. T-Mobile has already sold out of its 1.5 million G1 phones, the first to run the OS, even prior to its release later this month. Thanks to Android’s open source license, third-party vendors will be welcome to build on top of the operating system and even contribute to the underlying technology. This means third-party applications like Silverlight and Flash will be welcomed on the mobile phone.

“[The] Google phone is slightly different.” Guthrie said. “It’s more of an open platform, that is something we’re going to continue to look at. Certainly as it’s gotten deployed and if sales are good we’ll definitely keep our eyes out and look at that in the future.”

In fact, because the Android mobile browser is based heavily on Google’s Chrome desktop browser, it may be sooner rather than later that we’ll be able to see fully operable Flash applications on a mobile phone. Flash already runs on Chrome, and Silverlight works on the latest developer build.

TechFaith Launching Android Powered Handset In Early 2009

China’s TechFaith Wireless Communication Technology Ltd have today revealed their plans to launch an Android powered handset at the start of 2009.

TechFaith provides mobile phone design solutions to handset manufacturers that have their own brands, such as Motorola, LG, Amoi, Bird and CECT, as well as telecom operators including France Telecom, Sprint and SK Telecom.

“The development of a prototype Android phone has basically been completed. However, the launch of commercial products is unlikely to happen before the end of this year,” Ji Changxi, a senior vice president of TechFaith, told Interfax.

Aimed at the mainland China market, TechFaith are expected to announce the name of the manufacturer at the end of November.

“We are still in talks with several interested customers,” he said.
